When Thomas Tuchel took over at Chelsea, no one expected the success to be immediate.
However, the German manager was able to provide just that, winning the Champions League against all odds, seeing off Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final.
Now, with the club doing well once again in the group stages, there are some, including World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, who believe they can do it again.
Very few clubs have been able to win the trophy back to back, with the most recent being Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane, but the Italy international backs them to join the illustrious few on the list.
He told Walfoot: “I think Chelsea can do it. They have a great manager in Thomas Tuchel, and a very good team. Real Madrid did it three years in a row, which was a historical accomplishment for the club and Zidane, but to win the Champions League, you need a lot of things to go your way. For me, English clubs are better prepared”.
As he later points out, Manchester City have been trying to lift the European trophy for years, and yet always fall close to the last hurdle, showing just how impressive Chelsea’s feat was last season.
Whether the Blues can do it again, however, remains to be seen.
There’s a long way to go, and as Cannavaro points out, a lot of things need to happen, all the while fighting for the Premier League in the domestic side of things.
