Napoli should make a move for Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar this summer, given he’s availably on a free transfer.
That’s according to journalist Paolo Esposito, who believes the Newcastle man could be an ideal low-cost option for the Italian side.
Schar’s contract at St James Park expires in the summer, and it appears he will be leaving the club at that point.
So far, there have been no suggestions he will be extending his three-year stay in the North East beyond that point, having joined from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018.
He is currently free to negotiate with any club he likes in Europe, and recent reports have indicated there are several clubs thinking of picking him up.
Napoli were named among them recently, with their budget likely to be limited and them needing to replace Konstantinos Mavropanos, who returned to Olympiacos in the January transfer window.
The Newcastle man would fit the bill, particularly if he’s available on a cheap, and Esposito believes Aurelio de Laurentiis and co should be looking at him.
“Schar is an experienced 30-year-old defender, with many appearances in the national team (Switzerland), owned by Newcastle,” he told Area Napoli.
“Without spending anything on his name tag, with a low salary to pay him, I would take him.
“He is a versatile defender who can play on the right and in the centre of defence. Excellent in the aerial game and not slow, despite his height of around 6’4″.
“He has personality, a good long throw. Yes, under the above conditions, I would take him to Napoli.”
