Without wanting to add more misery on Liverpool fans during this transfer window, we’ll quickly take you back to last summer when Jürgen Klopp came very close to getting Piotr Zielinski.

The Poland international was said to be on the verge of signing for the Reds, but Udinese, for some reason, decided to block the move and send him to Napoli instead.

While not a regular starter under Maurizio Sarri last season, coming off the bench more often than not, the 23-year-old still made 47 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A side last year, and isn’t looking back at what could have been, like a move to Anfield, for example.

Asked about the failed move by Przeglad Sportowy, Zielinski said: “I never had such thoughts. What happened happened. It turned out differently, but I’m so glad I went to Napoli. We have a great team, a great coach and fantastic fans. I only see the positives. It’s here that I want to continue my career, and it’s a choice I never regretted.”

Admitting he was very close to teaming up with Klopp, the young midfielder is especially delighted to be teammates with Marek Hamsik, who he considers to be the best in his role in the Italian league.

Scoring six goals and picking up seven assists last season, Zielinski is now aiming to get even more this time around, as he strives for continuity in a club he wants to eventually lead to many successes.

The former Udinese starlet has also allegedly attracted interest from Manchester City, catching the eye of Pep Guardiola.

That, however, will be a story for next summer.
