Reims striker Hugo Ekitike has labelled Newcastle United a ‘great club’ and admitted he smiles when he sees the rumours about a move to St James Park.

Ekitike is the breakout star of Ligue 1 this season, having scored nine goals in 23 appearances in the league this season, an impressive tally for his first year in the top flight.

He’s subsequently been heavily linked with a move away from the French club, particularly during the January transfer window when Newcastle were known to be keen.

They were determined to spend their money that month and Ekitike was among those they looked at, although a deal could not be struck.

Their interest has not gone away, though, with many predicting Newcastle will make another bid for the 19-year-old’s signature this summer as part of a major rebuild in the North East.

A move to St James Park would be a huge step for a player who was playing in Denmark just a year ago, but he is seemingly ready to embrace it if the offer arrives.

“It makes me smile because it’s a credit to my work. It makes me feel like I exist,” he told L’Equipe.

“I know that what I do in the field is good; it is recognized. And not just by anyone. It pushes me to give the best of myself. I always want to progress and be the best.

“I respect this great club (Newcastle) very much. But it was done quickly; it was not the timing. It was better to stay here, to make a full season, to confirm.

“I imagine it (the summer) to be eventful! I think that people will show interest in me. On my side, I will be calm because I am surrounded by the right people to manage it.”
