Newcastle United icon Faustino Asprilla has defended Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez after the Uruguayan admitted he doesn’t understand what Jurgen Klopp is saying to him.

Núñez joined Liverpool in a £67.5m deal from Benfica in the summer with the Reds spending big to sign a true centre forward for Jurgen Klopp.

The belief had been that Núñez would compete with Erling Haaland at the top of the goalscoring charts this season but that has not proven to be the case.

While Haaland cannot stop scoring and is breaking records left, right and centre, Núñez has looked a shadow of the player that was dominating for Benfica.

The striker exposed one major problem this week when he revealed that he is struggling to adapt to life in Liverpool and cannot understand a word that manager Jurgen Klopp is saying.

That caused huge concern among the Liverpool fanbase, who were already growing anxious about Núñez’s performances so far this season.

Former Newcastle striker Asprilla has no such concerns, though, explaining his own take on it from his experience when he played under Kenny Dalglish.

“I see what Darwin says and I remembered when Kenny Daglish arrived (at Newcastle),” the ex-Newcastel forward told EPSN, relayed by Futbol Red.

“I didn’t understand the English or the Scots, but it was my problem. In the first technical talk Daglish on the board talked to me for half an hour.

“I looked at him, my team-mates looked at me, I was concentrating. He asked me ‘do you understand’ and I told him… no.”

During his time at Newcastle, Asprilla ended up scoring 18 goals and assisting another 19 over 63 appearances.
