Called up to the Belgium squad for the two friendlies against Mexico and Japan, Watford’s Christian Kabasele was handed 90 minutes against the latter on Tuesday night.
A bit reckless at times with his tackling and his passing, the young centre-back took the brunt of the criticism from the Belgian press on Wednesday morning, and was asked about his game by RTBF.
Feeling some of the criticism was perhaps a bit unfair since he isn’t all that used to play in a formation with three at the back, the Watford defender did, however, admit he needed to work on his distribution.
He said: “It isn’t a secret to say that it’s probably what I need to work on the most, and with their pressing, I had extra pressure on me. I did alright for Watford against Arsenal and Chelsea.
“Today, it was a bit more complicated, but there’s nothing to be worried about. If I was a perfect player, I’d already be nominated for the Ballon d’Or. It hasn’t been that long since I changed position. I still need to learn a lot of things”.
Switching to centre-back for the 2013-14 season, the Hornets’ defender used to be a striker prior to that at KAS Eupen.
Struggling to get game time under Walter Mazzarri last year, Kabasele has enjoyed a good run of games under Marco Silva this season, playing in all but one of this season’s league games, and helping out with one goal.
