Last October, Fernando Llorente of Tottenham Hotspur publicly expressed his desire to return to Athletic Bilbao in the winter market.
The striker’s contract at the north London club expires after the end of the season.
Mundo Deportivo reported in January that Spurs had decided against allowing the former Swansea City man to leave midway through the season following Harry Kane’s injury.
However, the Spaniard says that no longer seems to be case because he and the English side would have been willing to talk about the possibility of transfer, if the Basque club had made an approach for him last month.
“Nobody from Athletic [Bilbao] contacted me,” Llorente told ‘El Partidazo’ of Cadena Cope, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo.
“I was open to talk, of course. If they had talked to me, we would have seen each other, and I think Tottenham would have also agreed to speak.”
Despite the disappointment that the La Liga outfit never made an approach for him in January, Llorente, who will turn 34 later this month, has not ruled returning to Bilbao in the summer.
“You never know about football with this. I do not close the doors to anything and less to Athletic, who have given me everything and where I have grown as a person and as a player. You never know,” he explained.
Clearly, the Tottenham player still thinks a lot of his former club, and now it’s a case of waiting to see whether they will land him on a free transfer.
