Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Rafael van der Vaart has revealed joining the Premier League side was the best decision of his career, despite being linked with their local rivals Arsenal.

Specking to FourFourTwo, the Dutchman was asked about being linked with Arsenal before signing eventually signing for Tottenham: “Yeah it did get mentioned. I had several conversations with Robin van Persie, and he’d spoken to me about Arsenal a few times, but I never heard anything.”

“I did not regret it – joining Spurs was the best thing that happened to me.”

Van der Vaart signed for Tottenham in 2010 from Real Madrid in 2010, after a move to Bayern Munich fell through at the last minute.

The former Netherlands international spent two seasons at White Hart Lane, scoring 24 goals in 63 Premier League games for the North London club.

However, with the arrival of the likes of Moussa Demeble, and Clint Dempsey at Tottenham, Van der Vaart saw his chances limited, and in 2012 returned to his former club Hamburg.

The 35 year old is currently playing for Danish side FC Midtjylland after a spell in Spain with Real Betis.
