It’s fair to say Remy Cabella was something of a failure at Newcastle United. Montpellier president Louis Nicollin had hyped Cabella up hugely, saying more than once that the footballer was too good for a club like Newcastle United.
After Nicollin publicly saying he wouldn’t sell to Newcastle, he did. Cabella arrived at St James’ Park in July 2014 and big things were expected from the player.
Despite showing flashes of what he could do, it wasn’t consistent enough for Newcastle United and a year later Cabella left for Marseille on loan, as part of the deal which saw Florian Thauvin going the other way.
Now at Marseille on a permanent deal after the Newcastle United loan, French newspaper L’Equipe have asked Cabella about his time in England, to which he replied: “I was a starter 24 times (L’Equipe had to point out it was actually 21 times), I participated in thirty-one matches. It’s not like I had missed out on everything. But my best matches, especially against the big teams, were useless, I was not decisive enough.”
Cabella seems to be suggesting that it was no use playing well for Newcastle because the opposing teams were better. It’s an excuse, and he’s sticking to it.
