Friday saw the draw for the World Cup group stages, set to be held in Qatar later this year.
Argentina have been drawn in a group alongside Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia. That’s seen as one they should get out of, but anything can happen when the tournament actually kicks off.
Following the draw, Argentine newspaper Ole spoke to Emiliano Martinez, wanting to know what the Aston Villa goalkeeper makes of things.
He’s one of the fan favourites for the national side, after some penalty saves and his antics to put opponents off.
Ole asked ‘Dibu’ if he’s ‘crazy’, to which the Aston Villa player replied: “People think I’m going to do something crazy every game. I’m a happy kid, I like to make jokes, but I’m not crazy every day and I don’t throw bottles of water. I am calm, normal, but on the field I do everything to win.”
The fullback’s national side, Poland, are set to face Argentina, and will hope to qualify from the group with them. Martinez told Ole about the message: “The right-back from Poland just wrote to me, he asked me if Mexico was playing well. They already see us as if we were going to qualify… He was asking if they were going to pass us. Poland play very well, but they also have to watch us because we are also very good.”
On how Argentina stand regarding a chance of actually winning the World Cup in Qatar, Martinez said: “No one else can be a favourite when the best in the world is ours.”
