Former Brazil international Kaka has revealed he was surprised by Manchester City’s attempts to sign him in 2009.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, Kaka was asked about Manchester City’s interest to sign him from Italian giants AC Milan, during Mark Hughes’ reign at the Etihad: “I was massively surprised by City’s offer, especially as it has come during the January transfer window when it’s far less common for a big transfer to happen.”
Kaka was close to signing for Manchester City just months after Sheikh Mansour had bought the Premier League side, where he would have joined up with compatriot Robinho. A move to Manchester would have broken the transfer record at that time.
AC Milan had agreed to the deal after holding talks with Manchester City, but Kaka had doubts about coming to England, and eventually turned down the move to remain in Italy.
The Brazilian would go on to sign for Real Madrid just months after Manchester City tabled an offer to sign him.
Kaka is currently playing in the MLS with Orlando City, following a second spell with AC Milan during the 2013/14 season.
