Flamengo manager Filipe Luis has admitted that he sees Charly Alcaraz’s impending move to Everton as a failure on his part.

Placar cover comments from the Flamengo manager today from his recent press conference following the clash with Botafogo.

Alcaraz is expected to complete a loan move to Everton at some point today after the two sides agreed a deal for him on Friday night.

Flamengo have already publicly announced the loan move to Goodison Park, with subsequent reports explaining that it would be made permanent if the midfielder makes eight appearances for the Toffees between now and the end of the season.

There has been something of a battle over the narrative, with it first claimed in Brazil that Alcaraz had no idea about the move and initially wanted to stay with Flamengo. That idea, though, was put to one side following a conversation with Luis in which it was made clear he was not in his plans.

However, that was disputed today with it explained that it was in fact Alcaraz who had initiated the move to Everton and sought out the Flamengo boss when it was negotiated.

Luis’s comments suggest the same, although he insists that they part on good terms, and he is actually rather disappointed to see the midfielder depart.

“Alcaraz called me on Thursday and said, ‘Filipe, I want to talk. I have an offer from Everton Are you counting on me?’” he said.

“I said, ‘You’re after someone in your position, you’re after all of them.’ It’s up to you to want to fight and fight for your place on the team. He said, ‘Okay, I’ll fight for your place on the team.’

“I told him what I thought I wanted to improve; we had a sincere conversation. He said, ‘Okay. I’ll try.’ He showed it, he scored the goal, he played well. The next day, he decided to leave.

“I’m sad, I feel like it’s my failure, his failure for not working out in my hands. Given the investment made, that was my concern, a big investment and I’m not getting the best out of him.

“He decided to leave. I believe he can be happy. I sent him a message and he replied. I love Alcaraz. Why did he get minutes? Because he doesn’t give up, he wants to learn, he tries, he fights, he makes an effort.

“He runs, runs, runs. I insisted until the end. Not everyone will succeed. I hope he’s happy, I love this kid.”
