Tahith Chong has had a whirlwind of a week.
His move to Werder Bremen was up and down on a daily basis, with the German club going through peaks and troughs of optimism and fear someone else would snatch the Manchester United owned player.
Werder hadn’t wanted to pay Chong’s wages over the period of a two year loan, but a compromise was found along the way and he’s now moved until the end of the coming season.
Meeting up with his new teammates on Saturday, Chong has gone straight into a preseason training camp in Austria. There he’s been speaking to the media about the move, and when asked about any issues he’d had at Manchester United, the 20 year old made clear he holds himself responsible for the need to go out on loan.
Bild quote him as saying: “I played in the Europa League. Then you have to perform. I have to look at myself honestly and say: I didn’t do it the way I wanted to. So I have to keep working and see that I can do better in a year or two.”
Switching to the Bundesliga for a season looks like a good move for the youngster, and it’s clearly an option which appealed to Chong: “A big club in Germany that can help me develop. I’ve always been a soccer nerd, I’ve looked at everything – including Werder. The club had many Dutch players such as Eljero Elia. I hope I can play a lot. I don’t know much about the city of Bremen yet.”
Manchester United will hope the loan move goes well, and then perhaps Chong can have another go at making it at Old Trafford.
