Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães had a very good World Cup debut.
Despite not being used by manager Tite in the first game against Serbia, the midfielder was brought on against Switzerland, replacing Manchester United’s Fred.
Bruno Guimarães had a very positive impact in Brazil’s midfield, being one of the reasons they became more creative in the second half and found the goal for the 1-0 win.
The Newcastle star spoke to the Brazilian media after the match, and besides talking about anxiety for his World Cup debut, he also complained about the pitch.
“Very difficult first half. For me, to be honest, I was a little anxious, first game in the World Cup. But after I touched the ball for the first time, it got better,” Bruno Guimarães told Globo.
“Tough pitch, bad pitch today. But I think we deserved the three points, we played well. Especially in the second half. Now we’re qualified, right, the first step has already been conquered, really very proud of the team, it was a very difficult game.”
During the match broadcast, Globo commentator Galvão Bueno made many compliments towards Bruno, and pointed out Newcastle’s growth on the European scene, claiming he never imagined he’d see the Magpies turning down a lot of money from Real Madrid for one of their players.
With the midfielder doing so well in this game, it’s even possible he could steal Fred’s place in the team for the next match against Cameroon, since Neymar is set to continue to be out with an ankle injury.
