Loaned to West Bromwich Albion until the end of the season, at which point his contract with Bristol City will run out, Andreas Weimann knows the next few months are very important.
Not just because he has a club future to think about, but also because some good performances could help him get a spot in Ralf Rangnick’s Austria squad for the Euros.
Speaking to Kicker in his home country, the attacking midfielder was asked a number of questions about his season and what happened, revealing that he was forced into the loan to West Brom, but he’s very glad it happened.
He said: “It was very important. In the end, I wasn’t allowed to start for Bristol mainly because of a clause in my contract, because it would have otherwise been extended after a certain number of games. That had nothing to do with my performance and wasn’t my fault, it was the club’s policy.
“So I had to leave because I no longer wanted to play just 15 minutes a week. That has now worked out really well. I am now at a club that still has a chance of promotion and where we will hopefully make the playoffs.”
Since joining West Brom in mid-January, the forward has made nine appearances and scored two goals alongside his two assists.
He has been in England since 2007, when he left Rapid’s U19s for Aston Villa’s U18s, staying at the Midlands club until 2015, when Derby bought him for €3.8m.
Weimann then joined Bristol City in 2018, staying there until this January, when West Brom gave him a chance to impress in the final six months of his contract.
