Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the Champions League by RB Leipzig last week.

Manchester City allowed Angeliño join the Bundesliga side on a loan deal in the winter market and the left wing-back started in both matches against Spurs.

The first leg in London ended in a 1-0 win for the visitors and Leipzig sealed a comfortable 3-0 victory in the return leg, with the Spaniard assisting Marcel Sabitzer’s second goal of the tie.

This allowed Leipzig to make it to the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in their history.

Angeliño has sat down for an interview with La Voz de Galicia and given his thoughts on Leipzig making it to the next round of the European competition at the expense of José Mourinho’s side.

“The value of getting to quarters is the same. But it is true that the repercussions are not. Tottenham is a historic club in England and the fact that Mourinho is their coach, means they generate even more attention,” he explained.

“In any case, sportingly, I consider the achievement to be enormous, whether in these or other circumstances.”

During the first leg between Leipzig and Tottenham, the City owned player was seen laughing with Mourinho near the touchline. Angeliño was asked about the background of his relationship with the former Chelsea manager.

Responding to that, Angeliño said: “I don’t know if you’ll believe me, but it was the first time I was talking to him. It’s an anecdote more than anything I’m living.

“It was in the first leg. There was a moment when the game was stopped and I hear them tell me something, I turn around and it was Mourinho. The first thing he told me I didn’t understand.

“Then he asked me if I was happy in Germany and if I already spoke German. And, of course, the answer came out of me: ‘What am I going to speak German! I don’t speak any’. He laughed and started talking to me in Portuguese.

“It was a few seconds, but I was impressed. I never thought I’d end up laughing with Mourinho in a Champions League game. I didn’t see that coming.”
