Emiliano Martínez joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 and has been a regular at Villa Park since then.
His fine displays for the Villans helped him to make his debut for Argentina and he was part of their squad that won the Copa América [2021] and the World Cup.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper came up through the ranks of Independiente’s academy and then arrived in Europe in 2010.
TNT Sports interviewed Independiente president Fabián Doman, who opened the door for the Aston Villa star to return to the club in the future.
“I hope Dibu ends his sporting career here. What happens is that the goalkeepers are eternal,” he said.
Recent claims have stated Tottenham Hotspur are showing interest in the stopper. Apart from them, AS Roma are also in the mix to sign him. This, coupled with a deal until 2027 would make it complicated for Independiente to sign Martínez, at least in the near to medium term.
Doman has also opened up about the chat he had with the Aston Villa player’s father, over his chances of returning to the South American club. The chief has hinted the economic aspect remains key for a possible deal to take shape.
“I made a note on TV with Dibu’s father last year, and he ended up exchanging a box for Dibu… I’ll give him ten boxes if he wants, ha,” Doman explained.
“In the case of Dibu, there is gratitude because he’s a boy who grew up at Independiente academy. He was with [Pepe] Santoro in Mar del Plata and whenever he can he talks about Independiente.
“We have to wait, I always say that they make two giant moves and earn a lot of money quickly, that’s how it comes.”
