West Ham United star Edson Alvarez has admitted he needs to improve and step up his game, particularly now he is Mexico’s captain.
The West Ham midfielder has been speaking to Fox Sports in his homeland, relayed by AS, about his current status in the national team.
The Mexican has been a regular for his nation since making his debut against Iceland in February 2017, going on to made 83 appearances to date and playing in Gold Cups, World Cups and the Copa America tournaments so far.
He’s very much a mainstay of the team and was appointed as the country’s captain last year ahead of the Copa America 2024 tournament.
That honour was bestowed upon him by former manager Jamie Lozano, but he has retained it under Javier Aguirre, who replaced Lozano in the hotseat last year. Q
He’s more than aware of the pressure and responsibility such a position holds and admits he knows he has to do better and improve as much as possible, particularly with West Ham struggling to make a positive impression this season as well.
“Representing my country is a great pride and now that I have the opportunity to be the captain, I simply try to prepare myself in the best way possible,” he said.
“I have a lot to improve because I am human, because I make mistakes, and I have errors.
“It is not easy to see them or accept them and I think that is why I am where I am because you have to have courage to accept your mistakes, learn and move on.”
