One of the surprising moves of the summer transfer window was the return of Moussa Djenepo to Standard Liege from Southampton.
It wasn’t that he was leaving, since he had been on the periphery at St Mary’s, but more the destination, as he headed back to Belgium, with the Saints making a loss.
However, when he first arrived at Southampton from his now current club, the Mali international arrived amid a lot of excitement, which he discussed in an interview with DH.
Asked immediately what he had learned from his time in the Premier League, he made it clear that, first and foremost, the ‘mental aspect’ of football, due to the constant hardships you can face in England’s top-tier.
As for whether he feels he made the wrong choice, he said: “No, if I had to, I would do it again. Returning to Belgium is not a regression. I’m still young and I take it as a learning curve. In life, you never stop learning.”
His time at Southampton was filled with ups and downs, which he commented on, and admitted that the changes in managers really didn’t help him, sometimes going from ‘man of the match one week to the bench the next’.
Recalling goals against Manchester City, Sheffield United and Brighton as highlights of his time there, he also admits it was time to leave when he did.
He said: “It wasn’t easy to leave England, but life is made of choices. I do have to say I felt good at Southampton. I never had any problems with anyone.”
