Originally planning on retiring from international football prior to the World Cup, Vincent Kompany saw enough from Roberto Martinez’s side in Russia to believe they could still achieve something.
Therefore, following his country’s third place at the tournament, the Manchester City defender made a rather important U-turn, and decided to continue for the next two years.
Speaking to Voo Sport in his home country, the 32-year-old gave his reasons for his decision, and he seems rather upbeat about the future.
He said, relayed by Walfoot: “I feel too good to stop anything, and when we’ve got a team that has so much talent, maybe you need to push the adventure further.”
The Manchester City captain admitted to ‘doubting’ his future with the national team, but also said he wasn’t the only one to do so after the rather disappointing Euros under Marc Wilmots.
His main aim was to see Belgium progress, and that they did with their performances, with many aggrieved about their exit from the main competition, losing to France despite having around 65% of the possession.
However, his decision to stay isn’t personal, it’s for the team.
He continued: “I’m there to help, not to be the star, and I think that in the next couple of years, I can help the team a lot with my experience.”
