Ilkay Gundogan is having a great season for Manchester City, and it’s all the more impressive given the difficulties he faced at the start of the campaign.
The midfielder was hit by Covid-19 and has since spoken repeatedly about how big an impact the virus had on his fitness. Gundogan was so impacted by the infection that he’s helped the German media with campaigns focusing on people taking the issue more seriously.
He has 11 goals and two assists in 19 Premier League matches, with a further two goals in Champions League outings. Given his brilliant form, it’s seen more attention given to the player around the world sport media.
That’s seen Italian football legend Antonio Cassano, now a very talkative pundit, insist he tried to convince Inter Milan to sign the player, but the Serie A club weren’t able to get a deal over the line.
Quoted by FC Inter 1908, Cassano explained: “Gundogan is a player that I like: three years ago I did everything with Ausilio (sporting director) and I said to him, take Gundogan. When he had physical problems, I told Ausilio.
“Piero did everything to catch him, Piero is not one who sleeps. He was already a champion at Dortmund Gundogan, but three years ago he had many physical problems. Now he has become a champion and with Guardiola he is also the team’s top scorer.”
Inter missed their chance, and Manchester City will be glad of that.
