As Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers FC tonight play Ajax in the final fixture of the Champions League group stage, they basically need a miracle to get the qualification for the Europa League.
With five defeats in five games, having scored a single goal in the entire competition, the Scottish side would need to beat Ajax with a large result to pass their goal difference.
Rangers’ Van Brockhorst had today an interview with Dutch outlet RTL, and spoke about the chances they have of beating the Eredivisie giants that way.
He admits that will be difficult because of his side’s goal difference, but showed his surprise at how the table could look should all three points be picked up at Ibrox.
“The chance that we will win by five goals is very small. You have to be honest about that, but it is true that there is a small chance,” said the Rangers manager (via Soccer News).
“If we win the game, we’ll both be on three points and I didn’t expect that. In that sense, the difference is small. Ajax started great, but has not achieved such positive results in Europe after that.”
Following the five first fixtures in Group A, Napoli and Liverpool have already qualified for the knock-out stage, and as things stand, it’s the Italian side who are getting the first position, with Liverpool standing in second.
Ajax have only won one game in the competition, and that was against Rangers, with a 4-0 win in Amsterdam, meaning Tuesday night could all be about revenge.
And who knows? Maybe a 5-0 win to get that Europa League spot as the cherry on top?
