Despite the six signings made by Manchester United this summer, it’s probably safe to say that the player who’d been most linked to the Red Devils in the rumour mill was Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

Both the English and Spanish media covered the long saga with Erik ten Hag trying to sign the former Ajax man, and even though the Camp Nou side apparently wanted the midfielder to make the move, he insisted on staying there for another season.

Now with players having the first international break since the transfer window, we see lots of them being asked about the summer rumours. And with De Jong speaking to the Dutch media today, he was obviously quizzed about Manchester United.

As quoted by De Telegraaf, the 25-year-old tried not to expose the situation he’s gone through, despite confirming that there was a long discussion with Barcelona regarding his situation. He also claimed to have made the right decision by staying.

“Of course there was a lot of noise. I can’t go into full detail about what did and didn’t happen. The club had its ideas, and I had them too. But in principle it is all well done.

“Yes, I’m glad I did. I’m playing again now, that helps, yes.”

After confirming his stay at Barcelona, De Jong made eight appearances for the club this season, proving to be an important player in the team. In their pursuit for a new midfielder, Manchester United ended up signing Casemiro from Real Madrid in a €70m deal.
