Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof couldn’t hide his frustration following a negative result on international duty last night.
Sweden were defeated 2-1 by Greece in Athens, in a World Cup qualifiers, and as far as the 27-year-old is concerned, his side could have done a lot better.
“I have to calm down, otherwise I will say something stupid,” Lindelof said to the Swedish media after the match (via Aftonbladet).
“It’s not approved, what we are achieving today. I don’t know why, but we do not reach the level. We talked before the match that whoever wants it the most will win. The Greeks wanted it more than us and then we lost.”
Sweden had beaten Spain last week in a surprising comeback, and that had been seen as a clear sign that they could fight for top place in the group. Now with the defeat to Greece, they are back in second place, much to the delight of the Spanish media.
Thursday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo had ‘Muchas Grecias’ on the front page, referring to the Greek victory.
Victor Lindelof now heads back to England where Manchester United face Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday. With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer likely to use Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire for most of the season, the Sweden international will likely have to wait for his chances.
