France are one of the favourites for this summer’s World Cup in Russia but there still feels a lot to do for the team to get to their best.
Didier Deschamps has struggled to get a high level of consistency out of his French squad and Friday evening’s loss to Colombia was especially disappointing.
Colombia have some excellent players but France should really be beating them at home, so to go two goals ahead and then lose 3-2 is being seen as something of a blow.
After the match Tottenham goalkeeper, and France captain, Hugo Lloris spoke to the media and made it absolutely clear the performance was unacceptable.
The Tottenham stopper is quoted by L’Equipe as saying: “I do not think this match was under control. We had a very good first half-hour and at 2-0 we started to put in a little less effort. We are not going to point fingers at anyone, because mistakes are part of the game. In the second half, our face was unrecognisable. There are plenty of lessons to be learned tonight. Am I annoyed? Of course, when we lead 2-0 a home game and lose, that’s normal.”
Lloris isn’t the only one annoyed, the French media are too. L’Equipe rated Raphael Varane 3/10 and the goalkeeper himself only got 4/10.
The French public fall in and out of love with their national team quite easily so a lack of effort, as highlighted by Tottenham’s Lloris, won’t go down well at all.
