Douglas Luiz has had a completely miserable time since leaving Aston Villa.

At the Premier League side he’d managed to become one of Unai Emery’s most important players, at times even being considered one of the better midfielders in the Premier League.

That saw him become more important for the Brazilian national side, and the talk of a potential big money exit soon started. The eventual exit was to Juventus, in a deal which then saw Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea go in the other direction.

Those deals were technically separate, but Aston Villa’s Director of Football Operations, Damian Vidagany Igual, later coming out and making clear the Luiz to Juventus transfer was needed to help the club abide by PSR rules, saw suspicion grow among fans and media in Italy.

Juventus were previously involved in the Plusvalenza scandal, and for many it brought back bad memories. That saw public opinion towards the Douglas Luiz arrival change, and his performances haven’t done a thing to help.

Ahead of Aston Villa’s match against Bologna, Monchi has spoken to the Italian media.

He was inevitably asked about Douglas Luiz, and Corriere dello Sport quote him as saying: “We are talking about a strong player, last year he was fundamental for us. Changing country, team and championship can always be a problem, but I am convinced that he will soon find his best performance and become an important player for Juve.”
