Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana has put the injury woes behind him and has featured regularly this season.
The centre-back has made nine starts for Chelsea this season and only missed their defeat to Liverpool due to suspension.
Fofana has been speaking to Téléfoot, where he expressed his joy regaining his place at Chelsea. His comments are relayed by Foot Mercato.
Chelsea signed the 23-year-old from Leicester City in August 2022. He was limited to 20 appearances in his debut season and missed the entirety of last season due to a serious knee injury.
Fofana’s performances for the west London club this season helped him receive a call up from France for the last two international breaks. He was withdrawn from the national team squad in September due to concern over his fitness.
The France international is delighted to be featuring regularly for the English club.
“I’m very hungry, very very hungry. I spent a lot of time off the field, that’s what I like about playing football,” he said.
“These injuries hurt me a lot. To be back is a huge joy. They taught me that life is already hard. This allowed me to realise that I had strength of character and that despite all the hard knocks, you have to get back up in life. Always smiling despite the hard knocks, we have to move forward.”
The defender played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the first game of the season. Since then, the Blues haven’t lost when Fofana has featured for them.
Enzo Maresca’s side are fourth in the table, trailing third place Nottingham Forest by a point. The Frenchman has revealed Chelsea’s objectives for this season.
“We have a new coach who arrives with a new playing philosophy completely different from what we had experienced before,” Fofana explained.
“We have goals, which is to win something this year and finish in the top 3 of the Premier League. I think we have the capacity to do it.”
