Hugo Oliveira worked as a goalkeeping coach for Marco Silva at Hull City, Everton, Watford and Fulham.
He left the London club in December of last in order to take up a senior role himself. Famalicão took a gamble which seems to have been largely based on Oliveira’s work with Silva, both at Fulham and elsewhere.
In addition to that, the 45-year-old had worked as a coach for Carloz Queiroz, Jorge Jesus and Rui Vitória. Those are very big names in Portuguese football and the experience helped Oliveira get his big break as a manager.
As explained by Tuesday’s edition of O Jogo, Oliveira’s time at Famalicão got off to a torrid start. His first five games with the club saw him get just three points from a possible 18 and questions were inevitably being asked.
Since then, things have got better, and O Jogo state patience has been rewarded. His record now stands at 26 points from a possible 54, with Famalicão sitting comfortable in seventh position in Liga Portugal.
