Part of the woodwork at RB Leipzig these days, it’s easy to forget that Peter Gulasci, now 31 years of age, spent a good five years at Liverpool, or six if you take his initial loan to the U18s into account.
He never made an appearance for the Reds’ first-team, instead featuring a number of times for their U23s, but that doesn’t mean his time at Anfield was pointless.
With Leipzig now one of the bigger teams in the Bundesliga, where he has conceded 256 goals in 223 games while picking up 72 clean sheets, the Hungary international is a recognisable figure in world football, which is why Onze Mondial in France sat down with him for a quick interview.
Among the many questions surrounding his career to date, Gulasci was asked about how he managed to go from Hungary all the way to England in one transfer, which is a route few from his country have taken.
He replied: “I started to play for the national team when I was 15 at a level beyond mine. I was spotted by Liverpool at the time. There was a sort of partnership between our academy and the English club. I was one of the first players to leave for England. It was, of course, a huge step in my career. To join a team that huge at 17, it’s truly incredible”.
Then came the move to RB Salzburg, which helped him get to the Bundesliga a couple of years later, paving the way for many who followed the same route after him.
For Gulasci, there was a need for a ‘new challenge after six years at Liverpool’, and his move to Austria allowed him to ‘put in practice’ everything he’d learned in England at Liverpool.
