Taking the Championship by surprise by winning five of their first six (and drawing the other) games in the league, Huddersfield are still in a comfortable fourth place despite going through a a poor couple of months between October and mid-December.

Picking up three wins over the past six days, however, has reinvigorated the squad nicely, and their form, masterminded by German-American manager David Wagner, has caught the eye of a club in need of a new head coach.

According to Kicker, Wolfsburg, who sacked manager Dieter Hecking in October and appointed Valérien Ismaël in November, are still looking for someone else to improve the club’s league standing, and the Huddersfield manager is top of their list, with discussions intensifying.

The German magazine, publishing the news on their website, also reveal 45-year-old Wagner has a release clause in his contract at John Smith’s Stadium, which happens to be less than €1m, or the equivalent of a year’s worth of his salary.

Despite good results at Huddersfield, the opportunity to save such a big club from unthinkable relegation could be a challenge Wagner might find hard to refuse.

Having worked a youth coach at Hoffenheim and under Jürgen Klopp in Germany as Borussia Dortmund’s reserves manager, Wagner knows the Bundesliga fairly well, which could facilitate any potential settling period he may need at Wolfsburg.

With Christmas just around the corner, and Huddersfield doing well in the league for once, ‘keeping David Wagner at the helm of the club’ might be high on The Terriers’ wish list this festive period.
