Southampton defender José Fonte is pretty sure that Leicester City can be defeated by… FC Porto.
The player was interviewed by Diário de Notícias for their Tuesday edition. As Fonte has been in England for over nine years now, he was the one the newspaper thought would have most knowledge to comment on the Premier League champions.
With 13 points after five games, Leicester have already secured the first place in Group G. That’s why the game doesn’t matter much for the Foxes, but it’s a must win for Porto to seal their qualification.
“As they’re already qualified, they have to concentrate a bit more in the Premier League, because they’re not very well placed”, Fonte told Diário de Notícias.
“I don’t know if he’ll use the best players or rotate the team, but Leicester always work well.”
“Leicester will want to win it. But, in my opinion, Porto are favourites, no doubt, even if just because they have a need to win and Leicester, if you see, they don’t have much what to play for, they’re arriving calmly at the Dragao.
“If Porto get in with that Porto mentality from the past, Leicester have no chance.”
Fonte probably got excited with the chance to be a pundit for one day and ended up revealing everything he thinks about Leicester City’s incredible achievement from the last season. Despite that, he’s not very surprised with the Foxes’ disappointing campaign in the Premier League this year.
“The only difference is that last year everything went well, things were taken care of they went well and they got together.
“The balance starts to get right. We must be honest, Leicester don’t have the quality of Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal, and truth is that this year they’re in the middle of the table.
“It’s an organised team with very good individual values, such as Mahrez, Slimani, Jamie Vardy or Drinkwater. But that’s it, an organised team with some quality. Well, we have to be honest, don’t we?”
Yes, José. We do love when football players are honest.
