Patrick van Aanholt had a rather confusing Sunday. Told he’d be starting against Tottenham Hotspur, Van Aanholt was informed by an equally surprised Jason Denayer that he’d be starting the match instead.

Van Aanholt was left to watch the match with Sunderland officials and other players not featuring, and naturally there followed many rumours about what had gone on.

An injury was the most likely scenario, and David Moyes said that was the case after the match, but the manager’s manner and annoyance at the questioning only served to fuel rumours further.

Metro Nieuws in the Netherlands reckon that Van Aanholt looked ‘livid’, although they haven’t spoken to the player. The tone of the article suggests all is not well for the player at Sunderland.

Often when there’s injury updates about a Dutch player, those can be learned by the Dutch media via family and friends of the footballer, but there’s nothing leaking out with Van Aanholt just yet.
