After allegedly being urged to conduct some kind of “Mission: Impossible” to try and get Manolo Gabbiadini from Southampton, it seems Claudio Lotito pulled his Tom Cruise pants on and gave it a go.

That is, at least, what Il Tempo hint at on Friday, as they report the Saints are asking for around €30m for the striker they bought just last January for just over £15m from Napoli.

The only way Lazio will have found that out is via an enquiry, hence the suggestions the Serie A side at least semi-seriously entertained the idea of signing the Italy international.

Still looking for that forward capable of replacing a most likely departing Keita Baldé, the fact Lotito appears to have actually tried to sign Gabbiadini from Southampton shows their desperation.

Other names such as West Ham’s Diafra Sakho have been thrown into the mix, but replacing someone who scored 16 goals and picked up five assists in 31 appearances, primarily from the wing, is proving quite difficult.

One thing appears certain now, though, and that is Gabbiadini will be remaining at St Mary’s for the foreseeable future.

Or if he somehow does leave, it won’t be to join Lazio.
