Liverpool have fared well in the absence of their star defender Virgil van Dijk, who picked up a serious injury against Everton in October.

The Netherlands international is expected to miss most of this season and he was joined by Joe Gomez, who will be another long-term absentee for the Reds. Gomez has been out of action since November’s international break.

Reports from England have stated Jürgen Klopp’s side would look to bring in a new central defender in the winter market.

Last week, the Daily Mail reported RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano remains the top target for the English champions.

It was also explained Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Ben White are viewed as alternatives to Upamecano.

SportBild have relayed the Daily Mail’s claim and then provide their own information on Akanji’s case.

According to the German outlet, it’s ‘highly unlikely’ for Dortmund to allow the Switzerland international to leave Signal Iduna Park in January.

This would rule out the possibility of Liverpool signing Akanji next month, if they fail to land their main target, Upamecano.
