Jannik Vestergaard has won himself a bunch of fans this season, managing to fight his way back to be an important player for Southampton.
The second half of last season wasn’t a good one for the central defender, with him in and out of the team under Ralph Hasenhüttl. That’s changed very much during the current campaign and Vestergaard has been a regular for the Saints, that is until an old knee injury caught up with him.
Missing the last three Premier League matches, Hasenhüttl will be pleased when his newly important defender returns to the squad.
Vestergaard’s good season has seen him receive more attention in England, and the same is the case in his own country Denmark. He’s been in and out of the Danish national team in recent seasons, yet if he continues his good form upon return for Southampton, a place in the team for the postponed Euro 2020 looks realistic.
National manager Kasper Hjulmand has been speaking to Ekstra Bladet about improved players, ahead of the build-up to Euro 2020, and on Vestergaard he said: “In fact, I tried to get him to Mainz, but it failed. He has a strong personality and an amazing mentality. On the pitch, he has really performed strongly both in the Premier League and on the national team.
“He has deserved the chances he has been given. As a player, you have to feel that there is a route through when you perform on the club team.”
Hjulmand being a big fan is clearly good news for the Southampton defender.
