Among the several players who haven’t found their best form for Everton this season, Gylfi Sigurdsson ranks highly.
The Icelandic midfielder was one of the Blues’ star performers last season but has struggled to replicate that form in the first half of this campaign.
It’s seen him come in for plenty of criticism, with numerous fans believing he shouldn’t be in the team, particularly after Alex Iwobi’s arrival at Everton this summer.
So far, Sigurdsson has managed to keep himself in the team but, recently admitted in an interview that he did not enjoy being out of first choice picture.
Should such a situation arise again in future, it is almost inevitable that questions about his future at Goodison Park will arise.
He may seek a move elsewhere, to a more favourable league, and if he were to follow the advice of international teammate Emil Hallfredsson, that league would be Serie A.
In an interview with Fiorentina.it, the winger named the Everton man as the one Iceland player he would take to Italy, saying ‘he can play in all leagues, he’s a real number ten’.
Whether Sigurdsson ever gets the chance to go to Italy remains to be seen. He’s not entirely out of favour at Everton just yet and will be determined to make a go of things at Goodison.
Should he find himself on the bench again moving forward, though, he seems the kind of player who wouldn’t be happy and look to move elsewhere. If that situation arrives, Italy may be the perfect option.
