Despite what is being said in certain areas of the Italian press, it seems there remains a smidge of truth when it comes to Napoli’s interest in Jan Vertonghen.
The idea has popped up ever since it was made clear Kalidou Koulibaly could leave the Serie A side in the summer, and while the Tottenham defender isn’t the top priority, he remains an easy fix to their potential problem.
He certainly doesn’t fit the plan of signing young players to develop, but ‘he’s basically a certainty’, according to Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday, which means they know what they’re getting and he’ll do a job.
The problem remains his ‘very high wages’ and the fact Inter appear to have ‘the advantage’ for the centre-back, as we all know Antonio Conte likes to have some experience at his disposal here and there.
However, Gazzetta state Napoli ‘remain on stand-by’ for the time being, as they try and understand if they should make a move and, if so, when.
What would also work in their favour is the ‘Dries Mertens card’, which could be ‘exploited’, as the Belgian is set to sign a new two year deal in the coming days and ‘can only say good things about his friend and national teammate’ Jan Vertonghen.
A nice little Belgian reunion in the south of Italy this summer? There’s worse ways to see off the final years of your career, isn’t there?
