Even though there aren’t any specific updates on Boca Juniors’ efforts to sign Edinson Cavani from Manchester United on Friday, the rumours keep getting commented in South America.
The latest come from Uruguay, where the national team have now found themselves involved in the striker’s potential return to the continent.
Outlet 2 De Punta managed an interview with Mario Rebollo, who’s Oscar Tabarez’s assistant coach at La Celeste.
Cavani was naturally a subject in their conversation, and there were a couple of questions about whether it would be good for the national team if the striker was closer to his home country.
“It helps the national team if Cavani goes to Boca or wherever,” Rebollo told 2 De Punta (via TyC Sports).
“The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and with a good competitive level. If he’s close to here it’d be great, but if he’s not comfortable he would not bear it much.”
“It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable. It makes no difference to me if it’s Boca or another place, where he’s better. We have to have him with rhythm and competition.”
Edinson Cavani stayed out of Uruguay’s last couple of games as he was working on his fitness at Manchester United.
The Argentine media continues to point out that the striker isn’t having his best season with the Red Devils, as he’s scored only seven goals for them so far despite making 26 appearances.
Cavani’s contract with the Old Trafford side expires at the end of the season, although there’s an option to renew it for one more year, which has yet to be triggered.
