Leicester City started the season with a 2-2 draw against Brentford and have suffered five consecutive defeats since then. They are currently at the bottom of the table with a point from six matches.
The Foxes allowed two of their stars, Kasper Schmeichel and Wesley Fofana, to move away from the King Power Stadium in the summer window. The former joined OGC Nice while the defender moved to Chelsea.
Like Leicester, the goalkeeper has not managed to impress for the Ligue 1 side this term. He’s failed to keep a clean sheet so far and conceded seven goals in five games. The 35-year-old was in action during his side’s 1-0 defeat to AS Monaco on Sunday.
L’Equipe state the Denmark international was ‘passive’ when Monaco scored and gave him a rating of 3/10 for his performance. They have another report, titled: ‘Schmeichel, the haunted season.’
It’s claimed the custodian has been ‘ineffective’ since he joined Nice from Leicester, where he replaced Walter Benítez.
The report says the Ligue 1 side didn’t need to strengthen the position since Marcin Bułka was at the club, but their leaders and Lucien Favre were not convinced with him. They took an experienced keeper, which hasn’t worked out well so far.
L’Equipe end the report by stating: “It is early to open a debate on the position of number 1. Bulka showed that it is not necessary to wait to trust him, both last season… [and] against Toulouse, [1-1, August 7], when he was preferred to Schmeichel, who arrived at the club only a few days earlier.
“It’s up to the Dane to confirm in the next few weeks that his coach is right to push back the Bulka outbreak.”
Following a nightmare start since leaving Leicester, Schmeichel will have to impress in the next few matches in order to cement his place at Nice.
