Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven risks not being a part of the Netherlands’ squad for Euro 2024, with his persistent hamstring issue causing concerns in the set up.
That’s according to Algemeen Dagblad, who say the defender would be a certainty for the squad had he not been injured so much this season.
The newspaper covers the Netherlands side today and how manager Ronald Koeman will be formulating a large part of the 23-man squad he is taking with him.
They speculate that at least 15 names are already certainties for a place in the tournament, leaving eight spaces to be filled and the battle to get them on between now and the end of the season.
Normally Van de Ven would be an obvious choice as he’s playing at the top end of the Premier League for Tottenham and is left footed, both major plus points.
Furthermore, with Koeman using Virgil van Dijk in an advanced role in times of need, he’s the perfect player to leave behind thanks to his pace.
The problem is that he has been struck ‘again and again’ by a hamstring issue at Tottenham this season and that means he is not considered ‘reliable’ by Koeman.
That’s something he takes into account when considering the group he takes to Germany, so Van de Ven risks missing out because of it.
Presumably Koeman is hoping he can shake the problem off between now and the end of the season, thus making the decision an easier one, but for now the hamstring issue could see him left behind.
