Burnley star Zeki Amdouni has insisted team morale is still high at Turf Moor, despite them seemingly being on their way back to the Championship.
The striker has been speaking to Blick about life at Turf Moor this season as they battle to stay in the Premier League.
The Clarets currently sit 19th in the table on 13 points, level with Sheffield United in 20th place and 11 points from safety.
It’s been a disappointing campaign for Burnley, who had stormed to the Championship title last season playing an attractive, attacking football that earned them plenty of admirers and led to great hopes for life back in the top flight.
They’ve been unable to adapt, though, conceding 60 goals in their 27 games so far and only scoring 25.
That’s led to plenty of criticism, but Amdouni insists ‘the team spirit is still good’ despite 20 defeats in 27 games to date.
“Football is not always easy, but in such difficult moments we have to grow together,” he insisted.
Goalscoring numbers such as those mean there is a focus on Burnley’s forward players and their performances, Amdouni included.
He’s been a regular for Kompany this season since joining from Basel in an €18.6m deal from FC Basel in the summer but has only managed four goals and one assist in 26 games so far.
Those are nothing like the numbers he enjoyed in Switzerland, where he was a regular goalscorer for the likes of FC Stade Lausanne, Basel and other clubs.
It was his numbers there that led to Burnley being interested in the first place, although he admits he delayed the move at first.
He confirms that contact with Burnley ‘took place over two years ago’ when Kompany was still at Anderlecht, but a change ‘would have been too early back then’.
Instead, he decided to remain where he was and establish himself in his homeland, a decision that worked out well for him.
“I wanted to prove myself in the Super League first. At my age it’s important to play as often as possible,” he added.
