Jan Vertonghen won his 96th cap for Belgium on Saturday evening against Bosnia, and it’s made him the joint most capped player for the country.

The Tottenham Hotspur player can surpass Jan Ceulemans on Tuesday against Cyprus, and Vertonghen’s achievement is receiving much praise in his native country. It’s a chance to send some thanks the way of Spurs’ Super Jan, and his teammates have been getting in on the act.

Belgium’s national team make a real effort to get closer to fans, and that includes videos from the national camp. In a Vertonghen themed one, there was nobody better to start the praise than Toby Alderweireld, so often by his teammate’s side.

“Jan you are a fantastic person, a world class footballer. I think we played more matches together than alone, so it is almost impossible to play a game without you. Congrats my friend.”

Vertonghen sent the love straight back, replying: “Thanks Toby. I want to thank you for these beautiful words. Thank you, Toby, thank you, likewise.”

Then it was the turn of another Tottenham player, Moussa Dembele, who said: “Jan, I agree with Toby. Uh… (to the great amusement of the others present) congratulations, I see no one who deserves it more than you. Once you will be 40 years old and we even think that you will continue as a kit man to maybe win another cap. But it’s beautiful, it’s all to your honour. Congrats my friend.”

Dembele than planted a kiss on the cheek of his Tottenham teammate.

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne shared his own words of praise, suggesting Vertonghen will likely even retire after him, and then Vertonghen thanked everyone before declaring “Group hug!”
