Manchester City have been repeatedly linked with Holgar Badstuber over the past week or so. Pep Guardiola has struggled to work out his best defence since arriving at the Etihad and further additions are expected despite the big summer purchase of John Stones.
Badstuber makes sense in some respects. He’d be available because Bayern Munich aren’t counting on him, and is already aware of Guardiola’s methodology.
In other respects a move wouldn’t make so much sense. Most pressing is Badstuber’s injury record.
Manchester City and Guardiola took a gamble on Ilkay Gundogan and perhaps another gamble would be unwise, especially with Vincent Kompany also having long term fitness issues.
It’s an interesting dilemma, but if Guardiola wants Manchester City to go for it then they’ve just been given a boost.
German newspaper Bild report that Badstuber’s representative Prof. Dr. Peter Duvinage has revealed “very good talks” with Bayern Munich over an exit for the defender.
Badstuber’s contract runs out at the end of the season. Manchester City would likely have to face German competition to sign the 27 year old.
