After finishing third at the 2018 World Cup, Belgium will play their next match against Scotland, followed by a clash against Iceland in the UEFA Nations League.
Roberto Martinez was forced to leave out Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Adnan Januzaj of Real Sociedad due to injuries, while all defenders who were part of the squad for the trip to Russia have been selected for this month’s two international fixtures.
Watford defender Christian Kabasele has impressed for Javi Gracia’s side in the first four matches in the Premier League, but that was not sufficient for him to make it to the Belgium squad, despite playing more than some others.
The former Everton manager, who praised the 27-year-old, has explained why he left the Hornets player out of the squad to face Scotland and Iceland.
“I chose the same central defenders who were in the World Cup squad,” Belgian newspaper Het Belang van Limburg quoted Martinez as saying.
“I also know that Kabasele has very good progress. We continue to follow him. But for these competitions, the intention was to have the four new guys. But, of course, Kabasele comes into consideration for next time.”
The centre-back had initially made it to the preliminary squad for the World Cup, but failed to make it to the final 23.
If he keeps his form up for Watford then there’s surely a good chance of a recall soon.
