Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret was destined for a move to the Premier League with Everton when Carlo Ancelotti was in charge.

That’s according to former Everton scout Carlo Jacomuzzi, who insists the transfer was on the cards at one point.

Everton were linked with a move for Meret throughout 2021, with them first being linked in March of that year.

That was followed by several reports over the following months, with it stated that Ancelotti was keen on the goalkeeper to provide serious competition to number one Jordan Pickford.

By May it was being suggested in Italy that a move could very much be on the cards, with Meret keen to move on from Napoli if he could.

The deal never happened as Ancelotti left Everton for Real Madrid and the Blues’ finances dictated that transfers weren’t possible anyway.

There’s been no mention of Meret and Everton since that point, but Jacomuzzi insists it was very much a possibility.

“Meret at Everton? He could have gone there because of Ancelotti,” he told Radio Punto Nuovo, relayed by Calcio Napoli 24.

“There had been this interest. He is a player who until recently gave security, but then the role of the goalkeeper is difficult and if you don’t have the security you don’t play well.

“The goalkeeper of Napoli, being in a great team, receives 2-3 shots per game and the error is magnified. Now we have to assess the moment and listen to the coach and goalkeeping coach.

“Meret has quality, otherwise he would not be there.”
