Steven Bergwijn’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to Ajax is a rumour which has been heavily reported in the Dutch media for months now. First with the Eredivisie giants trying to buy him in January, and now with their hope of getting the signing done in the summer.
An update on this situation is now brought by journalist Mike Verweij, who on De Telegraaf’s football podcast, included the Spurs player as one of the three main targets the Amsterdam side will have in the next transfer window.
“These are the signals that Ajax will really take Bergwijn seriously this summer window,” said Mike Verweij (via Soccer News).
Verweij, however, points out how difficult it will be for Ajax once again, as they’d need a huge financial effort to convince both Tottenham and the player.
“The fact that it is complicated every time is not due to Ajax, but to Spurs and Bergwijn’s salary. That will be a serious task, but Ajax is going for it.”
In some reports from the Dutch media on this case, it had been claimed that Spurs would like to make close to €30m by selling Bergwijn this summer, which is the price they paid to sign him from PSV. And with the player not willing to take a huge pay cut, those are issues to be overcome.
Should Bergwijn want the move to Ajax, as it’s thought he does, then he’s simply going to have to be realistic on salary.
