Mirco Antenucci has revealed Reading wanted to sign him in the summer after he was released by Leeds United. The former Leeds United star is currently playing for SPAL in Serie B.

In an interview with Calciomercato, Antenucci was asked why he took the decision to join SPAL, despite offers elsewhere. The 32-year-old confirmed Reading offered a lucrative contract, but he always had plans to return to Italy. Antenucci said the decision was made for family reasons and the fact he wanted to play in Serie B after a two year absence.

“I had another significant offer from Reading, who are now fifth in the Championship, but I decided to go back. I wanted to go back to Serie B, I wanted the girls to go to school in Italy. It was a perfect choice, because Ferrara fulfilled all my wishes,” said the former Leeds United star.

Antenucci could have been going up against Leeds United in the race for promotion to the Premier League if he’d taken the decision to join Reading. Both clubs now have a realistic chance of grabbing one of the four play-offs, with Leeds United just one place above Reading in the table.
