Girona’s rising star Arnau Martínez has revealed he’s got a soft spot for Arsenal, but insisted his focus is solely on the Spanish club.
Mundo Deportivo have an interview with the 21-year-old today in which he discusses all things about his career to date and reveals his fondness for Arsenal too.
Martínez is a part of the ‘historic’ squad which got Girona into the Champions League last season and at one point were surprise contenders for La Liga.
The full-back has been earning rave reviews for his performances and even worn the captains armband several times, a clear indication of how well thought of he is at the club.
He’s very much one to keep an eye on moving forwards, with Girona now establishing themselves as a side who will happily develop talent and give it the playing time to flourish.
That was seen last season, with Martínez one of several younger players in the squad and the likes of Savio starring to such a degree Manchester City snapped him up this summer.
The big challenge in front of them is the Champions League, with the draw pitting them against the likes of AC Milan, Liverpool, PSG and Arsenal in the league phase of the competition.
Martínez isn’t concerned, though, and is even looking forward to taking on the latter as he has something of a soft spot for them.
“Yes, I like Arsenal a lot and, in addition, they have a similar style to ours,” he said.
“They are a great team and receiving them at Montilivi with the Champions League anthem will be very special.
“We know that last year we had a historic season for the club, but this year is another season, and it could turn out better or worse, depending on how the team is doing. I think we don’t have to compare and, as the word says, it’s past.”
