Having completed the purchase of Newcastle United earlier this month, the Magpies’ new owners are planning a grand rebuild in the coming years.
To do that, Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has been identified as one of the candidates and this has been reported in the Dutch press over the past few days.
On Tuesday, De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen told Voetbalpraat the ex-Arsenal man ‘will start talking’ to the Premier League side ‘in the short term’.
Appearing as a guest on Veronica Inside Ochtendshow, the reporter has provided further details about the possibility of Overmars arriving at St James’ Park.
Driessen is of the belief that if an opportunity arises, the Ajax chief will leave the Eredivisie champions for Newcastle.
“Overmars will go, I think. If he gets the chance, he goes,” Driessen was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.
“Overmars has to start in January or February, because he has to put together the squad for the new season. And his successor must do that for Ajax.”
Ajax are currently running riot in Europe, unbeaten in their Champions League group, recently drubbing Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in the process, and sit top of the Eredivisie table, four points ahead of PSV.
