In need of improving their defence, Newcastle United have identified Kieran Trippier as one of their main targets in the winter market.

Earlier on Monday, we carried a report from Marca, who explained that Atlético Madrid have received an ‘irrefutable’ offer from the Magpies for the right-back.

The Tyneside club plan to propose a deal worth €8m per year to the player, which is more than what he is currently earning with the La Liga winners. It was also stated that Los Rojblancos ‘will decide’ on the 31-year-old’s future.

A shoulder injury forced the England international to miss six matches between November and December. Since returning to action in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Sevilla last month, he has made two more appearances.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man’s latest outing for the Spanish champions came against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Another report from Marca now claims the weekend clash could have been Trippier’s ‘last game as an Atlético player’. The fullback was the last man to leave the pitch and after the tie he applauded the home supporters at the Wanda Metropolitano.

It’s claimed the defender’s ‘gesture can be interpreted’ as something of a goodbye ahead of a potential move to Newcastle.

Atlético face CF Rayo Majadahonda in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, and in a few days’ time we will know whether the clash against Rayo Vallecano was Trippier’s last tie for his current employer.
